THERESA KARKOSKA - ‘TK’

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.”

Having spent the better part of her adult life homeschooling and launching her three children, TK is a self-taught artist specializing in oil paints. From early in her life, she always enjoyed drawing and crafting but never saw herself as an “artist." She would paint simple murals on her children’s bedroom walls, as well as many lettering pieces to decorate her home. Over the years, while knitting, sewing, and gardening, among other hobbies, TK not only found a love of learning, but an adoring fascination with light, color, and texture.

In the fall of 2018, TK’s 71-year-old aunt gave her a nudge to take her artistic gifts more seriously. A few months later, with the encouragement and support of her family, she went for it. Immediately, she felt an indescribable connection, an awakening as if the shofar had been blown. From the feel of the paints and the smell of the oils, to the depth and variety of colors, she knew there was no going back to life before. No more standing at a distance of who she was supposed to be; there was something inside of her that demanded expression. Facing her homemade, wall-mounted easel, there was no conscious choices being made in the intimate creative endeavor. There was only one way to translate this solitary experience--capture it on canvas and allow each painting to quietly express itself.
